play ‘Nyan Nyan Stack’

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Over the weekend I worked on a game for Ludumdare 22 on the theme of ‘Alone’.  The original upload had some critical bugs, but I’ve fixed that now and made it available on Mac and browser too. Play it here, or download it from the LD site.

Please let me know what you think! :)

Messenger problems

This really isn’t going great, but I’ll keep stabbing away at it. Having a lot of problems with the character and animation, so I’ll quickly animate the character again. o_o

Ludum dare 20 – concept!

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

LD20 Theme is ‘It’s Dangerous to go alone, take this!’ My game is about a messenger trying to deliver a message, but you have to face a number of hazards. At various points have the choice of items to help you with your quest.

Hopefully the idea is scalable and manageable. Wish me luck!

Ludum Dare 20 – join us at CB2 Bistro! :D

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Ludum Dare 20 is almost upon us, and as always we’ll be gathering at CB2 Bistro in Cambridge. It’s a challenge to make a game entirely on your own in 48 hours based upon a theme given to you on the start of the day.  The actual main event starts on the morning of Saturday 30th in the UK and lasts until about 3am on Sunday night.  Come and join us!

i love snow man – simple Ludum Dare jam game!

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

play the game online (or download for PC or Mac).

I’m very glad to say I have a game to share for Ludum Dare 19 on the theme of ‘Discovery’. The version of the game I finished is pretty simple, and I wasn’t able to get most of what I hoped to do in place. However, my primary goal for Ludum Dare this time was to make something with an animated 3D character, so this was a good step forward for me.  The game is completable, and takes about five minutes to play through.  Please let me know what you think! :)

I still love snow man!

Monday, December 20th, 2010

My game is taking a little while, but I’m really enjoying it now, which is the most important thing. I’m using this opportunity to learn some new methods – things I knew in theory, but had never implemented myself. This should allow me to create content much faster, and get my game wrapped up. Hoping to have it ready tonight.

I love snow, man!

My Ludumdare project went really badly yesterday, to the point where I had to scrap it and start again. Today’s is going much better, I hope I have something ready to share on time. :)

Ludumdare this weekend

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Ludumdare is this weekend! I’ll be trying to make a game from scratch from a theme I won’t know until tomorrow morning! :D I’ll be making my game at CB2, which is the cafe in Cambridge frequented by many of the UK’s coolest indies (and me!).  Gotta keep this modest so I don’t screw it up, wish me luck!  I might post a few updates!

Ludumdare 18 this weekend!

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

It’s that time again! Every four months I participate in Ludumdare, which is a 48 hour game making challenge. You make the whole game from scratch over the weekend, only learning the theme on Saturday morning. I’ll be doing my entry at CB2Bistro with many other Cambridge and UK people.

My goals this time are to make something a little more polished, with title screen, music, sound effects and everything in place. I’m giving myself strict time limits so that I don’t spend too long on graphics, design, or let any one task harm the project. Thankfully my new laptop is much nicer to develop on, so I should be comfortable. Also: No penguins!!!

Here are the tools I’ll be using:

  • Engine: Unity, with Monodevelop IDE.
  • Libraries: iTween for lerping
  • Graphics: Photoshop, 3DSMax
  • Audio: SFXR, Garageband, Audacity.

Penguinagain – #3 at Ludumdare!

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Penguinagain tied for 3rd Place overall in Ludumdare #16!  You can play it here.

Congratulations to Chuchino for placing first with the very charming Cat Planet, and Fiona’s excellent space themed ‘Scavenger‘. Hempule shared 3rd place with me, and Minecraft buddy Notch’s game placed fourth. Whoo!

I was really happy with how my game came together. Right at the end of ludumdare with only one hour left, I lost almost two hours work. I was determined not to give up though and I cut every corner to make sure I had something playable.   I got a title screen and end screen in there, as well as music (albeit annoying). The graphics are also less scruffy than my previous LD games.   Here’s a video of Penguinagain if you haven’t had chance to check it out!

I’m seriously considering developing this into a proper game in the future. What do you think? Would you be interested in a game several hours long in this style?
